Iceland - Day 5

On our 5th day in Iceland, we left Hofn in the morning and drove almost 3 hours to get to a small town called Egilsstaðir to take a quick break and gas our car up. After that we drove another 2 hour 30 minutes to our next waterfall called Dettifoss. To get to Dettifoss, you would need to drive off road for almost a hour before you see signs for the waterfall.

At Dettifoss, you would need to go down some stairs and then a rocky walk way until you reach the waterfall. Dettifoss is where they filmed Prometheus.

After Dettifoss, we decided to check out some areas where they filmed Game of Thrones.

First place we went to Hverir where there were were bubbling pools of mud. In Game of Thrones, season 3, Sam is wondering through a blizzard. You can see a thick mist coming from the ground. This is the area where it was filmed but in the winter when there's snow.

You can see this part of Iceland looks like sand and mud.

Next we went to Grjótagjá cave where Jon and Ygritte filmed their love scene.

This was our last Game of Thrones stop. This is called Dimmuborgir. This is where the Wildings camped beyond the wall.

After our Game of Thrones excitement, we decided to get back on the road to go to our final destination for the night. On our way, we stopped at another waterfall called Godafoss. Godafoss means waterfall of the Gods. It was definitely very beautiful to look at.

Our final destination for the night was to get to Akureyri which is in the northern part of Iceland. Akureyri is so beautiful and have stunning views of the mountains and the harbor.

These pictures were taken at 10PM!! It was still very bright out so we were able to walk around town taking pictures.

We stayed at Acco Guesthouse in the downtown area. Our room was on the top floor and was pretty big for just the two of us. The bathrooms and kitchen was shared. One of my complaint was that our room was across from the kitchen so people were loud and not considerate about the rooms near the kitchen. The other complaint was that the bathrooms are shared. So if you like your own personal bathrooms, make sure you read before you book. We didn't really care if we had shared bathrooms but the bathroom on our floor was being used consistently by one room so we had to go to another bathroom on another floor.

We tried this place called Sushi Corner which is a sushi train restaurant. The sushi was not badly priced and the fish definitely tastes fresh since the town is on the harbor. But the sushi does not compare to the sushi we had in Japan. Japan still has the best sushi we're ever tried. But this was still a good experience to see how sushi is in Iceland.

Another place we tried is called Akureyri Fish and Chips. This fish and chips is probably the best I've had. It's a whole fish fried in batter. It was crispy and it was so delicious. E got the fish of the day burger.

Akureyri is definitely a place you should add to your itinerary.
