Iceland - Day 3

Good bye Reykjavik! We were treated so well and we loved our two days there. But it was time to leave and start our journey around Iceland.

The first stop on our list was to go to borufoss! It took us about 40 minutes to get there from Reykjavik.

Borufoss is a waterfall. It's not as famous or touristy as the other waterfalls. But this place was used as a shooting location for Game of Thrones as the home of the Children of the Forest.

Even though we were not super close to it, it was still beautiful from afar. We were on a cliff looking towards it.

Our next stop was Oxararfoss which was only 15 minutes away. To get to the waterfall, you have to go through a rocky path which was also used to film Game of Thrones. Can you tell we're Game of Thrones fan? This waterfall is in the Thingvellir National Park and flows over the North American Tectonic plate. It was definitely beautiful and breathtaking. There were a lot of tourists but this is worth seeing.

Next we headed to the Geysirs. Geysirs was a 50 minute drive from Oxararfoss.

The Geysirs were amazing! We were wondering why people weren't standing in one section so we went to stand there. Turns out the water sprayed over that area after it shoots up. So we were drenched in water afterwards but it was so worth seeing this in person. This area is really touristy so there will be a lot of people. Parking is hard to find but if you're patient, you'll find a spot. There is also a Geysir Center that has restrooms, restaurant and a gift shop.

10 minutes away is Gullfoss. It's Europe's largest waterfall and it's so beautiful. There is also a rainbow that is above the waterfall. You can also get close to the waterfall. Just prepare to get wet so bring a poncho.

If you are heading west towards this waterfall, there are two parking lots. The top parking lot on your left has restrooms and a gift shop. But you'll have to go through a path to get to stairs to get to the waterfall. The second parking lot on the right goes straight to the waterfall so no stairs needed.

Seljalandsfoss was our next stop and it was a hour and 36 minute away. The drive there was farmland and some dirt road so be careful when you drive.

This waterfall was one of my favorites because you can climb rocks to go behind this waterfall. Make sure you wear a poncho or a waterproof jacket or else you'll get wet. We got wet but it was so worth it.

Make sure you cover your cameras. We used a shower cap to cover our cameras in order to get some of these shots. This area does have a coffee shop and portable restrooms at the entrance. You do have to pay for parking at a pay station.

We finally arrived at Hotel Edda in Skogar where we would be spending the night. We rented a queen room with a shared bathroom for about $153. The hotel is in the middle of nowhere but is located near Skogafoss. We didn't know that everything closed early so by the time we arrived after 7pm, all the restaurants were closed. They did have a restaurant at the hotel that opened a bit later so we ate there. The room had a bed, desk, some storage and a sink. The bathrooms were down the hall and was shared with the whole floor. The place was a bit creepy and outdated. It seemed like a scene from a horror movie. Every time I had to use the bathroom, I made E go with me. We definitely do not recommend staying here. Skogar is peaceful and we loved it but the hotel needed some work. If you can, drive to the next closest town called Vik and stay there. But if you have a camper, you can stay by the waterfall.

At about 9PM, we decided to go to Skogafoss. Skogafoss was definitely peaceful and serene. It was about a minute drive from the hotel. Next to the waterfall is a staircase that you can climb up to the top of the waterfall. We decided to make the 200 ft climb to the top. It looked easy but it was such a hard climb so it's not for those afraid of heights. But once you got to the top, it was worth the scenery.

After Skogafoss, we decided to head back to the hotel to sleep so we can get up the next day to go to our next destination, Hofn.

FOOD

Somehow we made it through the day only eating one meal. This is the meal we had at the hotel restaurant. The appetizer is tomato soup which was really good. The chicken wings were mediocre at best. The entree was Cod with vegetables and potatoes. This was actually pretty tasty.
